4.0 HOW MANY HOURS AND WHERE IS THERAPY CONDUCTED?
ABA/DTT (discrete trial teaching.)is reported to be most effective when the child receives 30-40 hours of one-on-one therapy per week. Many families start the program at a reduced number of hours and gradually increase the number of therapy hours the child receives. Initially, therapy is usually conducted within the child’s home during the first year of therapy. During the second year, many children attend pre-school and continue to receive home therapy with a reduced number of hours.

Here is a child's interaction with a teacher or other adult who is being as helpful as possible without appropriate training:
Teacher: Hi, Alex, are you excited about Christmas?
A: [no response]
Teacher: What are you going to do on Christmas?
A: I don't know.
Teacher: Are you going to get presents?
A: Yes.
Teacher: What else are you going to do?
A: [no response]
Teacher: Do you have a tree?
A: Yes.
Teacher: Who's going to bring presents on Christmas?
A: I don't know.
Teacher: Is it Santa Claus?
A: Yes.
Teacher: [smile] Thanks, Alex!
This is the child's half of the conversation:
"I don't know, Yes, Yes, I don't know, Yes."
Any learning going on? (By the way, I've watched people have 'conversations' like this, then comment "He's talking so much more!")
Here's how a trained person might make this an opportunity for practicing conversation skills:
Teacher: Hi, Alex, are you excited about Christmas?
A: [no response]
Teacher: Are you excited about Christmas? Say, Yeah, I want to open my...
A: Yeah, I want to open my presents!
Teacher: [Smile] Me too! What presents did you ask for?
A: I asked for presents.
Teacher: What presents did you ask for? Say, For Christmas, I asked for...
A: I asked for a bike. For Christmas.
Teacher: Cool! [Small tickle] Are you excited about Christmas?
A: Yeah, I want a bike.
Teacher: [Bigger tickle] A bike! That's great! I've got my tree all decorated with ornaments. I put lots of ornaments on MY tree. [Point to A's tree.]
A: I put heart ornaments on my tree.
Teacher: Alex, that's so great! [Great big tickle]
A: Ahhhhh! Cut it out!
I thought you were suppose to avoid the questions starting with a w. Or is that different with aba therapy?
Tammy
The W questions are the hard ones for the kids..... I believe this is to be a method to teach them how to answer the W questions and understand them..... I can see a huge difference in how it works
I know sometimes Jeffrey still has a problem with those w questions. It is almost like you are speaking a foreign language with him. And he gets so impatient, lol. Feel sorry for the woman he marries.

No, you want to shoot for at least 20 hours of intensive intervention per week.My 27 month old get 15 hours per week. I don't think that's too much at all.
They do it in his bedroom, and he would never go in his room ever. He would freak out if I took him in there to get dressed. Now that we have lowered the time it He will play in his room, and he isn't quiet all day. It was really too much for him.
Not to say that will be the case for your son. I would start with as much as you can...and then see if he is OK with him..We gave it 4 months..I mean it will be hard on him and something to get use too, but after 4 months we realised it wasn't working. He has now mastered 4 new things, and looks forward to his time with the therapist..He wasn't mastering any skills at the 4 hours a day.
Again we started at 19mnths so that is alot younger. We plan to increase it again in a few months.
Man oh man the W's! We've been working on W questions for 2 straight months in speech therapy. I feel bad because we've missed the past 6 sessions due to no transportation. Hopefully we will pick up next week. I read that the school I'm looking into practices ABA. I never heard of this until this board. Can you guys explain to me how ABA works?
Thanks!!
How much is appropriate for a 3 year old?????
